Flagð undir fögru skinni?

Satt að segja var ég að vona að Sigmundur Davíð yrði allt öðruvísi stjórnmálamaður en við höfum átt að venjast.  Hann var nýtt og ferskt andlit sem lofaði öllu fögru - að því er virtist óháður hinni gömlu flokkapólitík.  Þrátt fyrir að enginn vissi í raun og veru fyrir hvað Sigmundur stæði þá var þorsti almennings í breytingar svo mikill að einn og sér reif hann fylgi Framsóknar frá núlli uppí 17% í síðustu skoðanakönnun og drengurinn úr MR og Oxford virtist á fljúgandi siglingu.

En í gær fór aftur að bera á gömlu Framsókn.  Eftir forkastanleg og ósvífin vinnubrögð Einars K. Guðfinnssonar tilkynnti Sigmundur litli að Framsókn myndi ekki sætta sig við að hvaladráps-heimildin yrði dregin til baka.  Nú var ljóst að Framsókn ætlaði sko engan veginn að sitja á hlutlausu hliðarlínunni eins og þeir höfðu lofað heldur ætluðu þeir sér að notfæra sér sína lykilaðstöðu til his ýtrasta, eins og Framsóknarmanna er von og vísa.  Það fékkst svo endanlega staðfest í dag þegar þeir draga lappirnar við myndun nýrrar ríkisstjórnar sem þeim lá samt svo svakalega mikið á að mynda fyrir viku síðan.  Sem fyrr eru það hagsmunir Framsóknarflokksins sem skipta þá meira máli en hagsmunir þjóðarinnar.  Hvað er nýtt?

Breytingar hvað?  Trúverðugleiki hins "nýja" Framsóknarflokks hefur beðið mikla hnekki og von þeirra um endurreisn flokksins er að öllum líkindum draumórar einir.  - You can put lipstic on a pig...but it´s still a pig!

Jóhanna kveikir von í Uganda

Margir veltu fyrir sér hvort það var viðeigandi og yfir höfuð fréttnæmt að draga fram þá staðreynd að Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir yrði fyrsti opinberlega samkynhneigði einstaklingurinn til þess að gegna embætti forsætisráðherra eða stjórnarleiðtoga í heiminum.  Sem betur fer hefur réttindabarátta samkynhneigðra á íslandi loksins skilað þeim árangri að fólk er ekki dregið í dilka eftir kynhneigð og ungu kynslóðinni finnst fáránlegt að slíkt sé einu sinni rætt lengur og telur jafnvel að mismunun og fordómar tilheyri algerlega löngu liðinni tíð.  Þetta er feykilega jákvæð þróun - en við megum samt ekki blekkja okkur til að halda að svona sé þetta líka alls staðar annarsstaðar í heiminum.  Þess vegna þótti mér mjög mikilvægt að að útlendingar tækju eftir gleðifréttunum um Jóhönnu - sem því miður verður að sætta sig við að vera orðin mjög opinber persóna þó svo það sé henni eflaust þvert um geð.

En vonandi yrði hún sátt við þennan fjölmiðlasirkus ef hún læsi þetta blogg - skrifað af samtökum samkynhneigðra í Afríkuríkinu Uganda!  Það er hræðilegt að lesa um þær hörmungar og mannréttindabrot sem þetta fólk er að upplifa í dag - en hugsið ykkur - að fréttin um Jóhönnu skyldi vekja þvílíka von og efla baráttuandann hjá bræðrum okkar og systrum í Uganda!  Seriously folks...pælið í því!!!

Þetta er ástæðan fyrir því að ég ákvað að senda tilkynningar um þetta á Amerískar fréttaveitur, blogg og ýmis samtök samkynhneigðra um leið og ég áttaði mig á mikilvægi fréttarinnar fyrir fólk sem enn býr við óréttlæti í sínum löndum.  Þessar fréttir geta e.t.v. kveikt vonir einhverra samkynhneigðra ungmenna um betri tíð og gert þeim kleift að hugsa út fyrir ramma staðalímyndanna þegar þau taka ákvarðanir um eigið framtíðarstarf.

Og eins og mig grunaði hefur verið eftir þessu tekið - hér má sjá umfjöllun Associated Press í LA Times, umfjöllun á bloggveitunum Huffington Post og DailyKos...og meira að segja hjá sjálfum Perez Hilton 

En í tengdum fréttum þá horfir aldeilis til betri tíma fyrir samkynhneigða hér í Bandaríkjunum með tilkomu Obama - en hér er frétt um að hann hafi skipað 16 samkynheigða einstaklinga í embætti náinna samstarfsmanna sinna í Washington.  Þetta þykja fréttir hér þó svo ekkert þessara embætta komist í líkingu við starf forsætisráðherra.

Wonkette um "ástandið" á Fróni

Okkur mörlandanum finnst fátt skemmtilegra en að heyra útlendinga tala vel um okkur og jafnframt móðgumst við agalega þegar glökkt gests-augað varpar ljósi á óþægilegar staðreyndir um land og þjóð.  Hvort það skrifast á barnslega minnirmáttarkennd eða sjálfhverfu skal ég ekki segja - en spurningin sígilda "How do you like Iceland?" hefur alltaf farið svolítið í taugarnar á mér - því fólk býst alls ekki við að fá nein önnur svör en að ísland sé ávallt "best í heimi miðað við höfðatölu"...og öllum öðrum löndum til fyrirmyndar.

Það verður að viðurkennast að ímyndar-áróðurs-maskínunni tókst mjög vel upp að byggja upp þá hugmynd í útlöndum að á Fróni byggi fallegasta, sterkasta og gáfaðasta fólkið í fallegasta landi í heimi... en eins og flestir vita hefur sú ímynd beðið mikla og óafturkræfa hnekki á undanförnum mánuðum - þökk sé fráfarandi valdhöfum og siðlausum útrásarvíkingum.

En hvað um það... í Washington D.C. er haldið úti skemmtilegu frétta-satíru bloggi er nefnist Wonkette þar sem fjallað er um pólitík og atburði líðandi stundar á svolítið sérstakan hátt.  Ekki er um verulega vinstri- né hægri slagsíðu að ræða en kaldhæðnin og "cynicisminn" er í fyrirrúmi.  Lesendur bloggsins taka fréttaflutninginn ekki alltof alvarlega en skrifa oft ansi skemmtileg komment sem eru ekki síður athyglisverð en greinarnar sjálfar.

Hér má lesa ansi áhugaverða "frétt" Wonkette um ástandið á Fróni - og það er ekki síður áhugavert að lesa komment lesenda og skoðanir þeirra á landi og þjóð. 

Jóhanna fyrsti samkynhneigði stjórnarleiðtogi heims

Nú hafa Íslendingar aftur brotið blað í heimssögunni en árið 1980 var frú Vigdís Finnbogadóttir kosin þjóðarleiðtogi - fyrst kvenna í heiminum.

Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, er samkvæmt minni bestu vitund, fyrsti stjórnarleiðtogi (head of government) heims sem hefur opinberað samkynhneigð sína.  Þetta eru ekki lítil tíðindi og eiga eflaust eftir að njóta heimsathygli.  Hverjum hefði dottið það í hug fyrir ári síðan að svartur maður að nafni Hussein yrði forseti Bandaríkjanna og að lesbía yrði forsætisráðherra Íslands viku síðar!

Það efast enginn um heilindi og heiðarleika Jóhönnu - ólíkt öllum öðrum stjórnmálamönnum getur hún orðið sameiningartákn þjóðarinnar fram að kosningum.  Hennar tími er kominn og við hljótum að óska henni farsældar í starfi á þessum erfiðustu tímum þjóðarinnar.  Væntanlega verður hennar fyrsta verk að hreinsa út úr Seðlabankanum.

Til hamingju Íslendingar - samtakamáttur mótmælenda felldi ríkisstjórnina - í fyrsta skipti íslandssögunnar var hlustað á fólkið - Lengi lifi byltingin!

Það er með ólíkindum að verða vitni af svívirðilega rætnum árásum á Hörð Torfason í bloggheimum í kvöld.  Hvað segir það okkur um andlegt ástand og innræti bloggara sem að kvöldi þessa viðburðarríka dags sáu sér helst þörf fyrir að sýna sitt skítlega eðli með hatursfullum skrifum?  Það er augljóst í skrifum margra hvað býr á bak við andúð þeirra á Herði og þetta fólk opinberar þarna sinn innri mann.  Verði það þeim til ævarandi skammar og afdrífaríkara en óheppilega orðað útvarpsviðtal HT.

Þrátt fyrir að maður fagni boðuðum kosningum þá er eins og allur vindur sé úr manni eftir tíðindi dagsins.  Veikindi Geirs og Ingibjargar eru mjög táknræn fyrir stöðu allrar þjóðarinnar.  Það er eins og að þjóðin sé öll að berjast við illvígt krabbamein - rambi á barmi örvæntingar.  Hvað í ósköpunum gerist næst?  Er okkur lífsvon?  Atburðarásin er orðin svo ótrúleg - þetta jafnast á orðið við Grísku harmkvæði Sopheclesar, Euripidesar og Aeschylusar.

Failure is Not an Option!

True leaders are only born during times of crisis.  When faced with overwhelming challenges - true leaders emerge just as the outlook is at its bleakest - and bring with them a new dawn of hope and determination!

The amazing story of Apollo 13 captures the true essense of leadership - as flight director Gene Kranz (played by Ed Harris in the movie) takes control of the situation in a calm professional manner.  He demanded the very best out of his crew and convinced everyone that they were going to succeed against all odds.  What appeared to be becoming NASA's worst catastrophe - instead became NASA's finest hour!

I'm reminded of this mindset everyday as I walk past my refrigerator and see a magnet I bought as a souvenir at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, with the words: "Failure is Not an Option".  I try my best to live by that slogan.

I was deeply encouraged last night when I heard a reporter ask Barack Obama what his Plan B was...in case his actions to revive the economy failed - Obama replied: "Failure is Not an Option...this is America we're talking about!" - I know Obama will succeed - there is no acceptable alternative.

If only Iceland had such a leader today.  If only Iceland had hope and inspiration.  If only Iceland had the good fortune of ridding itself of its incompetent and complacent leadership and realized that FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!  Iceland MUST shed the fear and despair and make the decision to OVERCOME!

Homeless in D.C. moved out before inauguration

As the city of Washington D.C. prepares to spend $47 million (plus another $27 million by neighboring communities in Maryland and Virginia) on President Obama's inauguration ceremony - the city's estimated 12,000 homeless people are being told to disappear for a week!  (see this news article from AFP)

It struck me as a harsh reminder of the reality and priorities of this great nation - to witness first hand the despair and hopelessness of the people on the streets of Washington D.C. - As I walked home to my hotel room on Thanksgiving night, past the White House, I felt like I was in a different world.  The streets were empty except for myself and the unfortunate homeless people, whom during the day I had hardly noticed.  

While most Americans enjoyed their stuffed turkey with their extended families - I walked by hundreds of faces - shivering from the cold and starving.  Young and old - men and women - white and black - some even displaced from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

I can't forget those faces - and while America celebrates and brushes it's undesirables under the carpet...I can't stop wondering how many lives could be changed if those $47 million were being spent on housing and employment for those who have absolutely nothing!  Actual human beings.

Bilateral agreements and the EU - Icelandic Christian Conservatives - Obama misses the point

Iceland has long enjoyed excellent relations with the United States of America and it has been our good fortune to share cultural and economic ties with our American friends, that far exceed those of most European nations.  Perhaps our close kinship with North America is partially thanks to Iceland´s geographical location as well as our free thinking spirit, inherited from our ancestors who fled half way to America to escape the European-style oppression found in the old Norse Monarchy. 

Today, Iceland´s acting foreign minister, Össur Skarphéðinsson, signed new bilateral trade- and investment agreements with the USA and expressed interest in making further agreements pertaining to securing Icelandic citizens special VISAs to the US, making travel and commerce between the two nations much easier.

When discussing the EU question, we must not forget that if Iceland joins the EU - there would be no more bilateral agreements with anyone.  Iceland would be forced to trade almost exclusively with other EU member states and mandated tariffs would almost certainly slice trade with the U.S. (now worth over 100 billion icelandic kronur per annum) quite dramatically.  Is that what we need?  Or should Iceland aim to adopt the Dollar and perhaps seek to join NAFTA?  I don´t know...I´m just asking!

I was somewhat surprised and saddened to see the introduction of a new political party in Iceland today.  The "Nordic Conservative Party" claims to be a Scandinavian-type right wing party, whose goals are to join the EU and reduce American influence on Icelandic culture!  Furthermore their goals are to strenghen the National Church of Iceland and force cultural and ethcial changes towards "traditional Christian values"!   Oh and of course they also want to create an Icelandic military force!  

Yikes... is it just me or do they sound like fascist lunatics???  I don´t believe Icelanders will take these clowns seriously... but then again...the current political situation in Iceland may be becoming a breeding ground for the rise of all kinds of dangerous nut jobs.  Seriously folks!  Be aware!

Finally some Obama news - In an effort to appease his gay supporters who were heartbroken by his selection of homophobic pastor Rick Warren to perform the invocation at his inauguration - Obama yesterday announced that also performing at the inauguration will be none other than Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in America.  While the GLBT community appreciates the nod - I believe Obama completely missed the point!  We don´t need a gay priest!  Religion and Government does not mix!!!  Why not skip both Warren and Robinson and skip using the bible when swearing in and skip using the words "So help me God"!

Dear President Obama:  While I appreciate your effort to correct your misstake in selecting Rick Warren and your attempt to calm down your substantially large gay base (oh and thanks for addressing the "Don´t ask - Don´t tell" policy in the military by the way) - you nevertheless continue to alienate a rapidly growing segment of Americans - Atheists!  

Why - in spite of your message of incluision - do we not have a place at your table, Mr. Pesident?

Obama visits Lincoln Memorial and munches on a chili-dog

Barack Obama yesterday broke his silence regarding the situation in Gaza and pledged his unvawering commitment to work for peace in the region from Day One of his presidency.  He has proven able to talk the talk...the question is, will he walk the walk?

Meanwhile, he took his family to visit the Lincoln Memorial last night after enjoying a nice quarter pound Chili-cheese dog at a Washington fast food joint.  Abe Lincoln of course is Obama's favorite president and the two have a lot in common.  Obama served as a Senator representing the "Lincoln State" of Illinois and announced his run for the presidency on the steps of the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, where Abe served as well.  Lets just hope that Obama's legacy will be equally impressive and that he avoids the tragic fate of Abe, who as we all remember, was assassinated at the Ford's Theater in Washington, by confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth.  Did I mention that Abe rejected organized religion, fought to end slavery and that there is considerable evidence suggesting he was America's first gay president!   Seriously - check out this NY Times article if ya don't believe me!

On a personal note, I must say I love chili-dogs!  And...it's quite a strange feeling to see pictures of Obama at the Lincoln Memorial just a few weeks after I was there myself, taking in the sights.   Pretty damn cool.  Which reminds me...I've uploaded a bunch of pictures from my recent trip to D.C. online for your viewing pleasure (click here to access my photo album).

I still have hope in Obama...even though he plans to say "so help me God" during his inauguration and that he plans to use Lincoln's Bible for the swearing in...AND...most disturbingly...that he plans to invite fundamentalist pastor Rick Warren to perform the invocation.  If he stays true to his promises once in office...I'm willing to look past all that...for now.

Bill Richardson's withdrawal a major disappointment

As someone who wanted to see Gov. Richardson as Obama's VP pick or Secretary of State, I am deeply disappointed by today's turn of events.  Gov. Richardson is without a doubt one of the best quailified cabinet appointees, a brilliant politician with valuable experience from his service to the U.N., as an Energy Secretary under Clinton and as the Governor of New Mexico.

It saddens me to see the most prominent Hispanic politician within the Democratic party, a guy with great charisma and a great deal to offer his country, be forced to withdraw from public service due to a campaign fund scandal.  I hope James Carville's predictions won't come true but he thinks that history and all odds suggest that the Democrats will continue to be rocked by scandals and Republican witch-hunts a la Kenneth Starr.  

It is so sad that in spite of hopes to the contrary... we're cointinuing to see "politics as usual" in Washington.

And so it appears the Timberwolves are finally coming around under the guidance of new head-coach Kevin McHale as the Wolves blast past the Bulls 102-92 in the first back-to-back win this season.  Handsome rookie Kevin Love (whose uncle was the lead singer of the Beach Boys) had a tremendous night with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Big Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Randy Foye and Sebastian Telfair all had a good night as well for the Timberwolves while rookie sensation Derrick Rose looked good for Chicago.

Movie Review: Milk *****

I recently watched Sean Penn's newly released masterpiece, Milk, and boy was I impressed!  Milk is a biographical-drama based on the true story of the life and untimely death of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in the United States in 1978.  Harvey Milk was elected City Supervisor in San Fransisco, representing the Castro district, which was at the time turning into the world's first "gay village" and the epicenter of the newly established gay rights movement.

Harvey Milk was at front and center when the first ever victory for the gay rights movement was won as Californian voters turned down "Proposition 6" or the "Briggs Initiative" which was led by Anita Bryant and would have banned gays and lesbians and anyone who publically supported gay rights from working in California's Public Schools.  Harvey Milk was later assassinated by his conservative competitor on the City-council, Dan White, brilliantly played by Josh Brolin in the movie.

Directed by Gus Van Sant, Milk tells the tale of a hero and a martyr.  Yet the movie does not take itself too seriously nor is it preachy.  Anyone will enjoy this film as it's message is relevant to all of us...it's not just aimed at gay rights activists and those interested in their history.  Milk is a thought provoking film that asks us to question our values.  Keep a box of tissues handy.  In one particularly touchy scene, Harvey receives a phonecall from a gay teenager in Minnesota who says he is about to commit suicide as his parents had decided to send him to a Christian hospital to cure him of his homosexuality.  As Harvey tries to tell the boy to pack his bags and run away to the nearest big city, the camera angle widens up to reveal that the boy is confined to a wheelchair.

In a year following the devestating loss of California's "Prop 8" this movie will hopefully serve to open the eyes of decent people everywhere who are perhaps still struggling with their homophobia, as the fight for equality continues around the world.  Harvey Milk lives on in the memory of all gay Americans who recognize him as a brave pioneer who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the cause.  To me his is an idol much like Icelandic activist and founder of the Icelandic gay rights movement, Hörður Torfason.

Milk hits Icelandic cinemas in February and will receive a broader release in the US as the Award Season heats up this month and many pundits expect Sean Penn to be nominated for as Oscar for his interpretation.  For those who use torrents, I happen to know that the movie is widely available there for download...while I am in no way condoning nor encouraging illegal downloading (unless you promise to buy the DVD later! ).   If for no other reason, you should watch this movie just to see the painfully attractive James Franco who playes Harvey´s boyfriend!    Oh and here´s a trailer for the movie.
